Jake Gittes (on phone): “I’ll tell you what, pal. If Ida wants to see me, she can call me. At my office.” [Hangs up phone. Phone rings again.]

Stranger: “848 1/2 E. Kensington, Echo Park. She begged me to call. She’s waitin’ for you.”

[I pause the movie, take a long, slow drag on my imaginary cigarette, and punch up the address in Google Maps. Los Angeles plays itself.]
