1. Otherness

    indefensible:

    In most debates, I’m able to understand the viewpoints and the conceptual framework behind the views of my opponents. I am against missile defence, but I understand the mindset of people who are in favour of it, for example.

    <snip, because you’ve probably read it already>

    From afar, watching this debate is akin to watching a friend defend the actions of their violent spouse. I simply cannot comprehend why you let this go on.

    Well put - this is exactly how I feel about the whole thing.  I made the mistake of posting a pro-public health statement on my facebook page, and the entire state of Arizona (okay, not really, but it seemed like it!) commented on it, mostly saying that they (the ones who are nurses, doctors, physicians assistants, chiropractors) or people they love (those same nurses, doctors, etc.) would LOSE THEIR JOBS if public healthcare came to pass, and did I really want them to LOSE THEIR JOBS????

    And this is where I get really confused.  Because wouldn’t public health care mean that more people would go to the doctor?  More often, even?  I mean, I haven’t had health insurance for three years, and in those three years, I’ve been to the doctor exactly twice, whereas when I had insurance (those were the days!) I went to the doctor regularly, at least twice a year for checkups and screenings.

    The way I see it, more people with access to affordable health care = more demand for that health care = more jobs for nurses, doctors, physicians assistants, chropractors.  So yeah.  I just don’t understand.
